14th Annual Windjammer Weekend, August 29 - 31
comes to Camden Harbor August 29–august 31, 2008, and features the
largest annual gathering of Maine's historic windjammer fleet—a
spectacular parade of sail against the majestic pine-shrouded backdrop
of Camden Hills. Nearly 30 schooners will converge on Camden for this year's event. Crews will
offer tours and cruises to passengers, than spill out of their boats to
join the fun. Windjammer Weekend offers something for everyone: a
Build-A-Boat contest that consistently inspires a meshing of efficiency
with eccentricity; an afternoon treasure hunt for the family, followed by an "adult" treasure hunt during the evening; the popular Harbor Hounds Dog Show; lobster crate races; a book fair; free movie screening of Captains Courageous
(filmed locally) that encourages moviegoers to wear foul weather gear;
a pie-baking contest; and the 3rd Annual Chowdah Challenge. The U.S.S.
Oak Hill, a 610-foot Harpers Ferry–class dock landing ship, will be on
hand for the event.
Visitors
are treated to a host of nautical demonstrations and crafts throughout
the weekend. Music will be provided by bands with nautical influences
in Harbor Park, and Aztec Two Step will appear Saturday night at Camden Opera House.
Face
painting, model boat demonstrations, a boat parade, and fireworks are
all part of the fun. Food, family fun, and the friendly atmosphere of
Maine's quintessential seaside village make this event a popular
late-summer celebration.
Pop!Tech, October 22 - 25
www.poptech.com
Every October, in the beautiful seaside village of Camden, Maine, at the height of the fall foliage season, there is a one-of-a-kind conference called Pop!Tech.Held in a beautifully restored, 19th-century opera house, this three-day summit explores the cutting-edge ideas, emerging technologies and new forces of change that are shaping our collective future. The conference brings together 500 visionary thinkers in the sciences, technology, business, design, the arts, education, government and culture.
But the conference isn’t a talking heads festival; nestled between mind-expanding presentations on a huge variety of subjects are musical performances, short films, demonstrations, and other one-of-a-kind surprises. Over the course of three days, every part of your mind is engaged.
The breathtaking content, beautiful setting, intimate scale, and informal tone make Pop!Tech an experience like no other. At the end, you’ll leave with dozens of new ideas, a better sense of where the world is headed, a new network of relationships and a lasting inspiration to create a better world.
