Our Favorite Places to Shop in Downtown Camden Maine

Ideally situated between the coastal shores of the Penobscot Bay and the stunning peaks of Camden Hills, Camden more than lives up to its slogans of “Where the Mountains Meet the Sea” and “The Jewel of the MidCoast.” With an array of restaurants, art galleries and quaint shops, visitors can spend hours strolling along the picturesque streets of this quintessential New England town. You will definately agree that Camden Maine shopping is a great way to spend the day.

One of the first stops is often at The Smiling Cow, a local mainstay that has been in business since 1940. This landmark gift shop is a must for visitors to the area with everything from catchy graphic t-shirts to unique home goods. Another special spot to browse is the Glendarragh Farm Lavender Store, a one-of-a-kind shop that is a feast for the senses. Here, guests are treated to lavender-infused soaps, sachets and lotions all made from the fresh flowers grown at their farm in nearby Appleton. For those looking to enjoy another Maine-made product, Swan’s Island Company offers luxurious handcrafted apparel and home decor made at their Northport weaving studio. Their blankets are amazing and unique to Camden Maine shopping!

Of course, a leisurely stroll often includes time spent perusing books and there are some great places to do this around Camden. In business since 1970, the Owl and Turtle Bookshop is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. This cozy bookstore includes a cafe in addition to its extensive literary collection, making it ideal for a lazy afternoon of book browsing. Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shops can be found in communities up and down the Maine coast and is known for its first-rate customer service and large selection of current best sellers as well as harder to find editions. A used bookstore is always a great find and in Camden, the place to shop is at Stone Soup Books, a quaint and quirky store that is brimming with vintage and out-of-print books.

Craftsmanship is at its finest when it comes to jewelry and Camden has lots of shops to explore. Russell’s of Camden, Thomas Michaels Designers, Inc. and Camden Jewelry Company all display some of the finest and highest quality pieces in the area with everything from local artisans to rare antiquities.

Maine is known for its abundance of art galleries and Camden is home to a wealth of them. Throughout the summer, guests can experience the famed Third Thursday Camden Art Walk, an opportunity to meander through the many galleries and speak with experts and artists. During the rest of the year, businesses such as the Carver Hill Gallery and Small Wonder Gallery are open to all with incredible works of art on display, many depicting the beautiful local scenery of Camden.

Last but not least… New things on Main Street. Welcome Conklin’s Merchantile – A home accessory store. Maine Sport is getting a face lift with a new space next door. Across the street there is a new shop under construction, it is rumored to be a sandwich shop.
