 What Daysailers are sailing?

Read on to learn about Schooner Surprise, Schooner Olad and Schooner Appledore.

If you’re spending time in Maine’s Mid-Coast, your trip isn’t complete without spending a day on the water of Penobscot Bay. With the harbor only a short walk from the Camden Riverhouse Hotel & Inn and the Tannery Lane properties.  You can easily book a trip for the afternoon and be back in time for dinner. Here are our three favorite tour boats in Camden, along with some of the things we love about them.

Schooner Olad and Schooner Surprise are also doing special event sails. Check out the list below.

Schooner Surprise:

The Schooner Surprise is another historic schooner based in Camden Harbor that first sailed in 1918 as a racing and cruising yacht. It even participated in the first race to Bermuda after World War 1. In addition to daily two-hour tours of the bay, the Schooner Surprise offers fireworks sails on the Fourth of July and sunset sails with live music (and complementary dessert!).

If you’re interested in animals and nature, the Birding and Marine Life tours are a must-do while you’re in Camden. These weekly tours are led by ornithologist Richard Podolsky, who guides you as you search for Maine’s native wildlife. While the focus is on birding, it isn’t unusual to see sea lions, porpoises, or even whales.

Schooner Olad

The Schooner Olad goes for daily sails from Camden Harbor between mid-May and mid-October. It was originally built in 1927, and its current owners have renovated it to bring modern amenities to its antique charm. On the two-hour cruises, you may go to one of the many islands in the area — Mark Island is a particular favorite for its population of bald eagles — or skirt the coast to view the lighthouse and beaches, depending on which way the wind takes you. Your tour guide is a native Mainer, so whatever happens, you’ll get expert commentary.

Another popular activity on the Schooner Olad is the monthly full moon sails. Every month, the boat takes people out to watch the sun set over Camden Hills State Park; from there you just have to turn around to watch the full moon rise over the Atlantic Ocean.

Appledore

The Schooner Appledore II is the newest of the boats in this post, but it definitely has a storied history. Its maiden voyage was a trip around the world, it’s housed college students for semesters at sea, and it regularly participates in Windjammer Weekend here in Maine. It splits its time between Camden in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter. Many of its crew members have made the 2,000-mile journey themselves, so you may be treated to a story of seafaring adventure.

On the Appledore, you can also take a turn at the wheel and help hoist the sails, or just kick back with the available concessions (including beer, cocktails, wine, and soft drinks).
